I'm pretty late to the having dogs game, and still have a lot to learn. That said, I've put a lot into finding better and better toys for my Pomeranian, Winston Wigglesworth. This newest toy, which I customized a bit, is by far his favorite ever! We've played many many hours over months now, and he's as excited about it today as he was when we first got it...actually, more, WAY MORE! At first I think he was a bit afraid of it. I remember trying to obscure the pole from his view (which is funny in retrospect).
To my knowledge dogs are the only animal in the world that'll look in the direction you point or gesture. (Even chimpanzees will stare at you blindly while you furiously point at something.)
Then there's this stupid toy with its 3 components: pole, cord, and toy. Winston's walnut sized brain appears wholly incapable of making the connection between them. That means every time I reach for the pole, his toy comes magically to life. He completely loses his mind with excitement, then chase the thing for 10+ minutes before it slithers back into the closet it lives in. We usually have a few of these sessions a day.
My previous gf had two Pomeranians and those guys lived their entire lives having never engaged in play like this. Knowing what I know now I think that's a terrible shame! It's also the main reason behind this post.
